Last Saturday, my mind was running wild with ideas for a big project , I didn’t even notice the gasoline boy is done filling up my car. I rolled down the window to get the receipt and was caught a little off guard when he said, “Thank you, Ma’am. Enjoy the journey.” I could not help but smile.
I went about my weekend and on Sunday afternoon, decided to come to Centerstage a bit earlier than usual. Gospel Jam has become a highlight of my every week since I first guested mid last year. It is only in Gospel Jam I could hear gospel music in such a healthy diversity of genres.
The night’s theme was Rock the Word, which is our way of recognizing and joining the National Bible week. Rock music is something most people do not appreciate. A lot would say it is trash and creates unnecessary noise. Watching the artists come up on stage one by one, I could only hope those people were there to hear the right kind of rock music. Music was created by God. He made it as an avenue of worship to Him. The enemy knows God seeks worshippers and he got in the way and turned this beautiful thing into a weapon of destruction.
Stranded, Winsouls, Heis and JuanSound are rock/metal bands that have actually won back rock music for Christ. Everyone was blown away with the talents of daddy/daughter tandem Dean and Isabella de Leon. it builds up even more as David Sta. Maria reads passages from the bible in between songs.
By the time rock icon Gary Perez went up on stage, everyone was on their feet, clapping, fist-pumping and shouting in praise. Hearing their testimonies, I suddenly remember the gasoline boy’s spiel.. “Enjoy the journey.”
These guys went through a lot before they finally realized the music they love is for Christ. They had to experience heartache, sickness and for some, even time in jail. The journey was not easy. But thanks be to God, He has won victory over sin and death. These musician rose from their situation with a new kind of music, songs that only glorify and magnify the Lord.
While the airwaves are still teeming with music we would not want our children to hear, hope arises from these God-ordained warriors who are armed to set an all out battle to win back music for Christ.
In Gospel Jam, I am inspired to see how the army of God is growing. More and more people are being enlightened and have decided to take the same path and join the journey to win back the airwaves.
If you want to experience and know about this burden that I have, listen to the radio the entire week then cap it up in Gospel Jam.
Why do you go to Gospel Jam every (well, almost every) Sunday?
This is what my parents and relatives asked me one time when I was about to leave for Gospel Jam that late afternoon. They just wondered why I would make an effort going to Visayas Ave. from our place in Pasig then be home late on a Sunday night (I have work on Monday mornings).
I started volunteering for Gospel Jam on August 2010. I recently resigned from my job and was in search for what God would want me to do next. Providence had it that Direk Mark invited me to join them on their fourth anniversary celebration. I thought it would be good to start on a ministry I knew and loved most, so I said yes.
This first Sunday of January 2012 marked my one year as co-host of Gospel Jam. Looking back, through our first offering for the year, “All Things New,” it’s reassuring to know that our perfect God does not look at our past with as much despise as we and our imperfect world would. Instead, He even creates new things out of it!
I’ve seen that in the lives of our guest artists that night and with the so many Gospel artists and sharers who had been with us for the past years.
The songs of Joy Cruzwith the Nehemiah Band were an opening salvo to what we would be experiencing that night. I will run and not go weeping/I will walk with my heads up/I will wake up with thanksgiving/with a new song in my mouth (When I Praise Him, Jon Owens).
Miss Jeanne joined Ate Joy in an impromptu duet for Sandi Patti’s “You Set Me Free,” singing Cause you set me…to sing as though I have no yesterdays…Father, you father me so patiently.
The Bulacan-based Sacred Silence is also one of the reasons why, despite the distance, I still go to Gospel Jam. Bands like them model commitment. Their understanding of their ministry causes them to go places.
Things started to go deeper when Byron Co intimated storiesof how God stripped him off to his very core – even of his finances and food – so that he can be clothed with a new soul and heart as he serves others. He now serves as a youth pastor of a local church.
It’s not so often that we get to have monologues in Gospel Jam. So, Ms. Joan Menco was a welcome treat. Her realistic portrayal of the woman accused of adultery and was about to be stoned, if not for Jesus who wrote on the ground and challenged the scribes and the Pharisees, silenced the crowd. The lines, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more” blew me away. Yes, Jesus, thanks to you – we are free.
It’s also refreshing to hear Janine “JJ” Liao sing more happy songs. The first time I met her, she’s a true blues artist, expressing her soul in deep lyrics and melancholic tunes. I am happy with how she develops as an artist over the years. Her song, “Light of My Life,” was made brighter; with the violinist-siblings, Jed and James dela Cruz of Nehemiah band joining her for an on-the-spot jam. It was cute.
Probably the best person who could tell how much JJ has changed is the one who introduced Jesus to her life – Lu Vergara, a campus missionary of Philippine Campus Crusade for Christ. Lu shared that God is currently leading her to a place she never thought would be her area of assignment: Europe. So, she sang one French song to celebrate that. Young ministers like Lu and Byron serve as inspiration because of their resolve to serve God through their full-time ministries at this age when money drives everything.
Pastor Caloy Diño’s testimony highlighted just that. He was a typical professional who dreamed of becoming a top executive – even CEO – of a booming IT company so he could have much money and prestige, at the expense of his family and health. Like a father, allowing his children to learn from his past, he unashamedly shared one by one how he lost his health, his finances, and almost his family because of his selfish dream. God was gracious, as after all that he and his family went through, God brought him to the ministry of Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC) – a company very different from what he envisioned himself to be in. Yet, Pastor Caloy spoke with so much clarity and conviction when he said, “I have never felt so at home. I knew I am home.” After his sharing, he sang Gary Valenciano’s “Break Me,” with his daughter Karlene: Make me and take me/Can you find me in this world/I've chosen and never let me go/Hold me and mold me/And if there's no other way/To make me whole/Go ahead and break me/Then remake me.
Yes, we have to be broken at times (even, many times) just so we can be made new again.
Buti na lang, si Ms Jeanne na ang bagong lead vocalist ng Eudia, who closed the night with songs. I can really feel that everyone was just trying to keep their tears from falling. But then, with Ate Jeanne, we ended up with tears of joy naman!
So why do I go to Gospel Jam? Because it is home.
Gospel Jam has been home, transitory or permanent, for those who just needs rest, those who need to recuperate (and they say their healing process was faster when they started regularly going to Gospel Jam), or those who just need a warm house to stay for the night – trusting that when the morning comes, the Lord had made all things new.
18“But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. 19For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland. 20The wild animals in the fields will thank me, the jackals and owls, too, for giving them water in the desert. Yes, I will make rivers in the dry wasteland so my chosen people can be refreshed.

WHEN GOD COMFORTS THOSE WHO LEAVE THEIR COMFORT ZONES
By Precious Liz Bañas
Being called to respond to the gospel entails one to move out of their old lives into their new ones. Comfort zone number one: Us, living in sin; where in we do what we want to do, regardless of what is right or wrong. And so we respond to the gospel and we get to know and experience God’s saving grace. We grow in faith in our churches and organizations. Now, when does our churches et al turn into comfort zones? It is when God calls you to do a more difficult task, and that your current ministry should be delegated to somebody who needed the growth through that ministry. There are other comfort zones that could appear in other forms we do not know of. But a fact remains; we have to leave these comfort zones for an uncomfortable one. The question is, are we prepared? But then, even as we leave our comfort zones, isn’t the Great Comforter with us always, everywhere we go, anywhere we turn to, anytime of the day and at night?
These were my reflections pondering on last Sunday’s theme; BEYOND OUR COMFORT ZONES. But the entire emotional tone of the concert seemed different. It was the first time I experienced Gospel Jam under the open moon lit sky. And I thought, well, not bad, the rain even postponed itself from making a scene of actually falling and ruining the set-up. Truly, God’s power supersedes anything. Direk Mark’s absence was felt, but of course he needed the break. (Everyone needs a break.) But we carried on, yaah! Girl power! We thank Joram though, a male-volunteer based in Australia, for being such a darling in helping Arla with the PPT stuff.
Miss Jeanne and Arla went on with their usual cheer and punchlines which always had me rolling over the floor with laughter. It is always good to have a fun time and simultaneously edifying the body of Christ with gospel music and the gospel itself.
JOY RACHEL FRANCISCO of Waterwalkers opened the night with her songs that never fail to encourage us. Prior to the concert night, one of my best buddies, Ken of Anonymous told me their band will be playing that night. And I was more than glad to see not only him but another friend who also guested in the band’s line up of songs. It’s a small world after all.
Why are we in Marina’s again and not in our home base in Conspiracy? Ah, yah, I wouldn’t miss to mention that what we are actually celebrating as well is ATS Night; the reason why we were all in shades of green. I was so looking forward to meeting these Bible scholars of ATS, I heard they are good, really good.
Symphony of the prestigious Asian Theological Seminary had a long vibrant line up of songs that rejuvenated our tired souls. And the band really stood up for their name –they made awesome harmony.
HE.IS.HERE.AGAIN!!! Pardon me for the addition of several periods in that sentence. But, really, Jude Matthew Servilla, is one of the youngest talents I know who possesses both talent and a humble heart that is in tune with the Master. Amen for his life and passion to sing for the Lord.
We had two singer-composers from Australia, Joram Villanueva and Andrew Mihaleff, which not only brought me to think of this church on a hill from the same country, but who also brought to us raw unplugged worship songs that sprung out of their overwhelmed hearts. Miss Jeanne called me to join them sing ‘on-the-spot’ while Andrew Mihaleff taught us his songs. And it was such an honor to worship God watching the vast dark heavens as the stars shine before our eyes.
That night I’m sure the Great Comforter was with us. He reassured us of His peace that was installed in us all along, that as we face dangerous frontiers; He will never leave us.
Gospel Jam presents "New Year, New Visions" (January 2, 2011)
I didn’t really want to begin this New Year’s blog by talking about climate change (not the band), which of course, is very trivial, but as trivial as it is I will take note how the cool breeze hinted 2011’s emotional climate for me. And just like how Ate Terese Magsalin welcomed me as I entered Technowave last January 2, I choose to define 2011 in two words - cool and fresh.
Besides the fact that it is Direk Mark Aranal’s birthday, that the venue is overflowing with guests and performing artists, and that I just came back from my NMAT hibernation (after almost two months), it is the very first Gospel Jam of the year! Yay!
Most of the times God uses GJ as His mouthpiece to relay His message to me; I always go home carrying a new revelation in my bag. I took note of Miss Jeanne Vicars’ random remark; we usually thank God for the blessings He gives us, but rarely do we thank Him for the trials that come our way. I was reminded to thank God for the personalized trials he sends me, to mold me.
I invited friends to come over and experience the first GJ of the year with me; I was surprised when this really really good friend showed up. So much for coolness and freshness there.
Speaking of fresh, this 2011, Miss Arla Fontamillas became GJ’s official co-host (way to go, Arla!). The chemistry between these three hosts is amazing. There is never a dull moment and I’d say this in itself is an understatement. They wouldn’t run out of things to talk about, from Trevoca to Alaska, name it, they’d have any topic in store for us audience. They are even planning of starting an online show, well, that’s one vision we could look forward to.
The guests that night belonged to 2010’s cream of the crop performing artists; we had Jude Matthew Servilla, Climate Change, Isabella de Leon, Indios, Sarah Balabagan, Jacque Oda (who sang a Cher classic), Shanne Velasco, Sacred Silence, JJ Liao, Sky Sanoy, Andrei Dionisio and Ms. Cathy Amaca, a Papuri singer. (Actually all Christian artists are world class artists since our talents and minds are set to glorify the King of kings.) Pero, malakas talaga si Direk. I believe God has His way of affirming His servants, and indeed Direk is blessed and surrounded with people who love and support him. I am privileged to witness love be exchanged between these people and him.
The night was extra special because Gospel Jam did not only have music makers and lovers of music, we also had Pastor Philip Tarroja who shared the Word of the Master Musician; our Father in heaven. I would not miss to jot here the points and the acronym he left with us, principles very much tied to Gospel Jam’s heart. First, are the four Biblical givens:
1. All the gospel will be preached to all the nations.
2. (Jude 24 Eph 5:26) THE CHURCH WILL BE perfected, COMPLETED, as it reaches its SPOTLESS BLAMELESS STATE
3. (MATT 5:46) Man have only are two fates; ETERNAL LIFE or ETERNAL DEATH
4. (Rev 5) In the end, there will be music, praising, singing and fellowshipping with God. And in the end…
Not everyday do I jump out of bed and tell myself, ‘this is going to be a great day!’ There are days that I dread waking up. In fact, many times I wake up feeling empty. We are not of the world, but we are still ‘in’ the world. Everyone, at least at one point in their lives was hit by the blues.
Solomon whined a lot on the inconsequentialities of life. When hell froze over Job’s life, his wife told him to just curse God and die. A fire can burn a twenty year investment. The Big C is making its way to the mainstream. What do we really have in life? Relationships? Money? Talent? Career? Our family? We think we’ll be happy once we acquire this property or once we finally meet ‘the one’. But it is a fact that our wants couldn’t be and never will be satiated.
So let me ask you again, what do we really have in this life? I almost gave in to my sadness a week ago but upon hearing Arla practice the song "Rescue" by Desperation Band with some of the members of One Voice, I was reminded, I didn’t really lose anything, I still have Jesus. He is enough. What am I even saying? He is MORE THAN ENOUGH!
January 9’s Gospel Jam became another night of rediscovery for me. I began hearing not-so-new songs in new ways, in them clung not-so-new revelations, but then revelations I had somehow overlooked. This I heard from Direk Mark Aranal, if there is something to be greedy about, it’s the presence of God. I wanted that. Who wouldn’t want that?!
Ate Cindy Lacanilao, being sick and all, wasn’t able to show up. But we had her through phone patch, which compensated her absence. Though we’d rather have her, we knew God willed her to rest. Her testimony would still be as powerful as ever even without her sharing it to us in person.
One Voice, a group born out of 180 Degrees serenaded us with light yet songs that had impacted us greatly. It was also a privilege having Liya Dioquino, JJ Liao’s comrade from the conservatory in UP Diliman. Having her ‘on the spot’ with Mama Jeanne in the song "More Than Wonderful," was indeed more than wonderful. Jay Tonido a ‘laking Papuri’ performer shared with us tunes that had ministered to us through the ages. I was happy when Arla pulled me to sing with her and the Canaceli sisters (members of One Voice) "Rescue" by Desperation Band. Before we called it a night, Proskuneo, a band that had also played in Gospel Jam, January of 2010, was with us again January of 2011. Hearing songs blessing the Lord’s name is a good way to start the year.
I had some of the Medical Ambassador Philippines missionary nurse staff with me in Gospel Jam. These are people who are always out there in the field. Their tired minds and bodies needed to be rejuvenated. And I thought, gospel music is one great way to achieve that. T’was good to watch their eyes go gooey once a song is rendered before them. Thank you GJ artists for uplifting our weary souls!
Now when I wake up, to make sure I don’t wallow in sadness, or be overtaken by ‘the blues’ I'll open the Bible, listen to Him speak… unang unasa lahat.
